Remembering
GARRET VOLKER
1995 - 2023
In August 2023 we lost our dear son, Garret Peacock Volker. He was a joyful inspiration for much of my artwork, and indeed, my method of painting became what it is as a result of my being both a painter, and an at-home dad to a beautiful boy who left me very little time to paint. I am so grateful to him.
Some of his drawings as a toddler made me totally reconsider the very elements of a painting as kind of language, where a circle means head, and a pair of dots means eyes and pointed ears mean cat, so that a visual composition becomes a type of visual sentence, a poem, a story, regardless of how accurately the elements are rendered.
Working in my studio in Snow Hill became an activity with Garret, focused more on what he could create and less about my obsessing over the crap artists obsess over.
Together, we made paper, we made bowls out of paper, we decorated the studio gallery windows for the holidays. He painted, helped clean up, and we played chess. We listened to my "old cassettes" with which he was as fascinated as I would be playing an old victrola. We played Vintage Bollywood hits and Indian devotional music, which he especially enjoyed.
These were the best days for me, and I miss them almost as much as I miss him. He was my studio partner, my son, and my best friend.
